Just before Memorial Day in June 2012, I was working in our store and met a most interesting and genuine elderly man. He was picking up his boat and we shared some pleasant conversation. It winds up he has been living here for 18 years and never caught a fish! That's unheard of in Olcott, the Ultimate Fishing Town. His name is Armand. His wife has been ill and his two children live in other states, so he really has no one to go fishing with. We shared some more conversation and he asked me if I wanted to hear a funny story. Of course I did!He told me one nice afternoon he decided he wanted to cook steaks on his grill. He has an awesome deck on the back of his house and put his grill a little too close to the house to cook those steaks. He melted the siding right off the back of his house! He left to go put the new pieces of on his home.
After he left, I thought about how truly sweet that man was, I wanted him to catch a fish. I also thought about the fifteen years of people I have met who have had nobody to fish with. From young to old, I must have met hundreds over the years.
Less than twenty minutes later, another elderly man walks in and asked "Do you sell boats here?" I told him many people sell their boats here. His name is Nick. He said his boat was just too big for him and he wanted to sell his and get a smaller one. He never had anyone to fish with him.
Instantly I responded with "Do you want to join my fishing buddy club?" He asked what it was and I told him I just started it and had the perfect man for him to fish with!
He was very pleased about this one and I told him all about Armand and how he never caught a fish in 18 years of being here. He asked me how old he was and I told him about the same age as he was. It winds up both of the men are 80 years old. Nick was very excited to think he could take someone fishing that never caught a fish here, especially someone his age who also had a boat. I couldn't wait to find out if they hooked up for some fishing!
A couple of days later, Nick came back with his awesome dog, Sam to let me know the details. It wound up the two of them hit it off very well and they were going to go to Chautauqua Lake to do some fishing.
I couldn't wait to hear their fishing story! The first thing Nick said was "well, he can't say he never caught a fish here!". Nick & Armand went to Chautauqua last Wednesday and had an amazing time! They caught over 100 fish and kept 80. They were a little sore the next day from all that reeling and boating, but are sure to go fishing together again soon.
That is how the Fishing Buddy Club got started.
